Since 2017, shrimp farmers in Kavali have adopted cluster farming a coordinated, community-driven model that has revolutionized productivity and disease control across the region. Faced with severe crop losses between 2014 and 2016, over 700 farmers united to synchronize key operations across 2,000 acres, including pond preparation, seed procurement, stocking, water exchange, and harvesting. Shrimp farmers in Kavali have embraced shrimp cluster farming, a collaborative approach that has significantly improved productivity, disease management, farmers have reduced production costs and minimized the risk of disease transmission within and across clusters.Since the adoption of cluster farming, shrimp farmers in Kavali have witnessed significant gains in both productivity and survival rates. Average yields have consistently reached 6-8 tonnes per acre per crop from 2-3 mt/acre/crop while survival rates have climbed from 50% to over 80%. This progress highlights the impact of synchronized farming practices and timely technical support. Recent harvest reports from the region further affirm the success of this collaborative model, showcasing healthier crops and improved economic returns for participating farmers.
Sri. Rao was a prominent entrepreneur himself. Born into a family of agriculturalists and industrialists, his knowledge was not just limited to aquaculture. He had immense experience in other businesses such as steel re-rolling, solvents extraction, fertilisers & pesticides, tobacco and amino acids.
With the advent of the blue revolution, Sri Venkateswara Rao took Indian aquaculture to great heights with fast-paced development in both processing and exports. In early 1993, he established a first-of-its-kind, multinational collaboration with Pingtai Enterprises from Taiwan, setting the stage for production and distribution of international-grade shrimp feed and shrimp farming in India.
India’s position in the aquaculture sector was further expedited by Sri Rao in 1998 when he formed the Aqua Products Processing & Export Division (APED) in East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. With great emphasis on quality, hygiene and value-addition, the APED unit, under Sri Rao’s guidance, delivered aqua products to international markets in Japan, USA, Australia and the UK. This not only facilitated foreign trade, but placed Avanti Feeds on the global map of seafood expertise.
Outside business, Sri Venkateswara Rao provided much-needed assistance to the education sector by establishing the AVR Trust in 1999. With the support of the trust, he set up the ABN & PRR College of Sciences in Kovvur, Andhra Pradesh. This was a dream come true for Sri. Rao, fulfilling his vision of a graduate and post-graduate college with modern facilities, competent faculty and courses in arts, commerce and sciences. He was also a regular contributor to several other educational organisations, old age homes and social welfare projects in different parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Throughout this quarter, we successfully conducted many farmer engagement and awareness meetings across multiple states in India, with a special focus on regions where shrimp farming is rapidly evolving. These sessions were designed to empower farmers with practical knowledge on feed management and sustainable aquaculture practices, critical to improving productivity and long-term pond health. Each meeting served as a platform for live interaction, allowing farmers to share their on-ground experiences, challenges, and innovations. This quarter’s outreach reinforces our dedication to inclusive aquaculture, placing farmer voices at the forefront and championing sustainable practices that build sector-wide resilience.

White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) is a highly contagious viral pathogen causing White Spot Disease (WSD) and one of the most devastating diseases affecting shrimp aquaculture in India. It poses a serious challenge to farm productivity and profitability, every year around 15-20% of seed is damaged below 4g stage with an estimated losses surpassing 1,000 crores annually.
Every year it shows 3 outbreak, March during peak winter, June-July during southwest monsoon period and in November during
northeast monsoon. This year prevalence was more than previous year due to many causes like early onset of monsoon, increase in rains, changes in viral strains and brood stock resistance, poor infrastructure, poor biosecurity tools etc are the major causes in increase in WSD this year. Many farmers are harvesting by seeing symptoms, without confirming WSD by PCR, which results in production losses.
